Sunriver is named Oregon’s first official “Dark Sky Place”

Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory and the Oregon Chapter of the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) announced Monday the designation of Sunriver as the newest addition to the International Dark-Sky Association Dark Sky Places Program – as a “Dark Sky Development of Distinction.”

Sunriver is the first “Dark Sky Place” recognized in Oregon and one of only 130+ recognized worldwide to date.

Established in 1988, IDA has led a movement to protect our night skies from light pollution. Their overarching goal, which revolves around the four strategic priorities described below, is to reduce light pollution and promote responsible outdoor lighting that is beautiful, healthy, and functional.

1. Celebrate the Night: Increase awareness of the benefits of the night for all living things, and how light pollution is an urgent environmental threat that individuals can help solve.

2. Dark Sky Protection: Protect exemplary dark skies through our certification program.

3. Lighting Where We Live: Engage cities and communities in reducing light pollution through responsible lighting policy and practice.

4. Skyshed Restoration: Implement coordinated, intentional, and scalable actions to slow, halt, and reverse the increasing rate of light pollution.

“We are honored that IDA has elected to welcome Sunriver into the IDA Dark Sky Places Program”, said Keith Mobley, President of the Sunriver Owners Association Board of Directors. “And we are pleased that our ongoing efforts of the past 60 years to be one with nature are recognized now for our protection of pristine skies from light pollution.”

What we are planning for at this time (all subject to change)

Anticipated opening on Thursday, June 25

  • Pools will be available Thursday-Monday only (times TBA)
  • Swimming will be occupancy-restricted, timed sessions
  • Sessions will be by online reservation only (coming soon)
  • Lap swim TBD
  • Expansion of days and hours anticipated, with details TBD

Final details are still being determined. We will provide more information prior to the opening date to educate you, your family and vacationing guests on how to safely access SHARC at www.sunriversharc.com

We hope everyone will play a role in ensuring the health and safety of all and help us kick-off a successful opening to the summer season. We thank you for your continued patience, understanding and adherence to all rules and regulations.

Recent Murray Model: Things Should Be Back To Normal By Summer

Currently, we are in unprecedented and extremely difficult times. We know that the foreseeable weeks ahead are going to be the most challenging. That said, it is difficult to think about life after the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, right now is the best time to think about the future and give yourself something to look forward to… A VACATION!

The Murray model released 03/31/20 by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation shows us that things should be back to normal by this summer.

If you are considering taking a vacation and you do not want to get on an airplane, cruise ship, etc. Sunriver is an excellent option! Given the current state we are all faced with, MRP is much more flexible with our cancellation policies on new reservations.

Mountain Resort Properties is a local, small, family owned and operated business that is being greatly impacted by this unprecedented event and we would appreciate your Summer reservations.

Thank you for your consideration in booking your next Sunriver getaway with Mountain Resort Properties. Please tell your family, friends and whoever else you might think would benefit from a Sunriver Summer vacation. We can’t wait to see you in Sunriver!

Reservations can be made online (www.mtresort.com) or by telephone (800.346.6337). We look forward to hearing from you!

From our family to yours, stay home, stay safe and lets do our part in flattening the curve as quickly as possible.

Thank you,

Sunriver, Oregon Update (COVID-19)

As you know by now, a lot has changed in the last week due to the COVID-19 outbreak and we wanted to reach out to you in order to apprise you of what is happening here in Sunriver. We want to reassure you that in these uncertain times regarding travel and your vacation, your safety and well-being continues to be our main priority for you.

The first thing we want you to know is that Sunriver as a community is not shut down, but the restaurant services are limited. This may very well be the perfect time to connect with your family by playing board games, soaking in the hot tub, going on bike rides, hiking and doing so many other things Sunriver has to offer. All that said, we want you to be aware that a number of services are currently closed in Sunriver and the surrounding area. A few of those services include, but are not limited to Mt Bachelor, the SHARC indoor pool only facility and most restaurants for dine in services. Many of the restaurants offer delivery or take out. Several of the restaurants such as the Sunriver Brewing Company and Blondies are offering take out and/or deliveries for food and even growlers of their award- winning beer. The groceries stores and the shops are open as well.

To your safety, our vacation rental homes are thoroughly cleaned, sanitized and disinfected between each stay. In fact, a vacation rental home may very well be one of the safest places you could possibly be during these uncertain times. Our properties are thoroughly cleaned with commercial grade cleaning agents and our linens are washed off site at commercial grade temperatures with commercial grade detergents. We are also taking extra measures to ensure your safety in our vacation rental properties.

It is also important to note that Sunriver has medical services available at High Desert Medicine (HDM). HDM can see patients as needed as well as test for COVID-19 and other illnesses as well. They have modified their office procedures so that there is little to not patient interaction in their common spaces.

In light of the current situation, we want to provide flexibility and assistance to our guests so we have adjusted our rental policies for reservations with stay dates through April 30th to allow you to change your dates of stay if you choose to. We will be following the policies of most major venues and you will be able to move your reservation dates.

Our company is a privately owned, small business. Our staff relies on us to provide their living wage and benefits. Our first priority is to the consumer for safety and our second priority to our staff for a living. As mentioned before, there is no need to cancel your reservation and we want to continue to offer you a safe place to get away from the city and spend quality time with family.

One of the benefits of staying in a vacation rental is that you are sharing the space with people you know and care about. You can cook your own meals in your vacation home a explore beautiful Central Oregon using your personal vehicle. Our outdoor setting is second to none and offers unlimited ability to social distance yourself and family. Another great benefit that we offer is that with most of our properties, you will check in directly at the home through our electronic door lock system. Fresh mountain air on a nice walk or bike ride in Sunriver may very well give you a revived peace of mind.

Mountain Resort Properties has been in close communications with several other locally owned vacation rental management companies here in Sunriver so that we can collectively make the best decisions for the community and our guests. The collection of these companies represents literally hundreds of years of local experience in this industry. All these businesses, including Mountain Resort Properties are taking very similar precautionary measures and adopting similar policies. We all want to thank our valued customers for working with professional management companies as opposed to renting properties that may not hold the same level of professional standards and ability to properly respond to situations like this.

If you rented through a third-party entity (VRBO, AirBnb, Bookingpal etc.) you may have purchased trip insurance and can present a claim directly. Please note that when booking through these third-party booking engines they simply direct you to book through our website and charge you a booking fee of up to 10% of your booking total. It is always better to book directly through the property management company – guaranteed.

We know that this is a personal decision for everyone. It is important to us that you choose what is best for you and your family. Our staff is working very hard to insure you, your family and friends have a restful, worry-free vacation. The weather is transitioning to spring and it will be summer before you know it. We look forward to seeing you.

Warm regards,

Tim Hadley

The Ever-Changing Weather of Central Oregon (It’s the Best!)

This time a year ago, Central Oregon was covered in a blanket of snow. Parking lots looked like they had mountains, roads looked like frozen rivers, and homes looked like the gingerbread house’s kids decorate during Christmas time. This year, however, is a whole different story.

Since the winter season began back in late December, Central Oregon has only received about 18 inches of total snowfall. Last year, in a span of just 5 days, the area received 16 inches! The two scenes are quite different.

Even though it hasn’t been the Winter most locals are used to, it doesn’t mean that one can’t enjoy everything Winter has to offer. Drive 30 minutes from Sunriver to Mt. bachelor, and you will see more snow than you can probably handle. It is the best part about the area. Spend the morning shredding down the mountain on what is said to be “the best snow in the world,” then head down to Sunriver and enjoy a nice bike ride on the paved paths, and lunch on the patio.

There aren’t too many places in Oregon, let alone the U.S., where one can experience snow on the mountain, then drive 30 minutes to town to walk on clear paths and enjoy the bright sunshine. It is one of the many reasons Central Oregon is a must-see area.

If you have yet to visit the area, put it on your bucket list. And now is the best time to come! Winter is fading to spring, the birds are starting to chirp in the morning, the sun is warm and bright, and the flowers are beginning to bloom. With events and different activities happening every day, it is the perfect place to spend a nice vacation! We can’t wait to see you here!

Bend Area Breweries: Where to Go and What to Get

It used to be our little secret: That along with the countless recreational opportunities in Sunriver, Bend (Central Oregon), there was a burgeoning craft beer scene. That trying to decide which brewpub to hit after a day skiing at Mt. Bachelor was a two chairlift ride discussion. There were options. And lots of good beer.

Then word got out.  Publication after publication when writing about the amazing skiing started including lines about Deschutes Brewery or Bend Brewing Co. Then beer publications sent dutiful writers here to see what all the fuss was about. Then travel magazines and newspapers dedicated entire stories to Oregon’s true “Beervana.” (Sorry Portland.)

It’s not a secret any more.

But that’s ok. Because the increasing popularity of craft beer meant more and more breweries and brewpubs in our little slice of Heaven.

Today, there’s nearly 30 breweries making beer here – from Prineville to Sisters, Redmond to Sunriver. They’re all different, but in some ways connected. A brewer who learned the craft at one place is now the head brewer at another. A line cook at one pub is now, after years of developing his own palate, the head chef across town.

SUNRIVER BREWING CO.sunriver-brewing
Initially started just south of Bend in the resort community from which it took the name, Sunriver Brewery‘s flagship pub is worth the drive from Bend and worth going to every day if you’re staying in Sunriver. The Fuzztail Hefe is a nice introduction to Central Oregon craft beer while the Vicious Mosquito IPA packs a little more of a punch. Parents, bring the kids because the brewery has a large and fun play area with a huge chalkboard and lots of toys. Don’t want to make the drive to Sunriver? A new Sunriver Brewery Galveston Pub opened in Bend in Spring 2016.

10 BARREL BREWING CO.
With its huge outdoor patio and fire pit on Galveston Avenue, 10 Barrel is a perfect spot to grab a beer al fresco. Its popularity has skyrocketed in recent years with solid brews like Sinister Black and OG Wheat IPA and the simple-yet-perfectly-named canned creation “Pub Beer.” Maybe the only thing better than the beer is the food. The pizzas are Top 5 in Central Oregon hands down.

DESCHUTES BREWERY
This is the brewery that started it all for Central Oregon in 1988. Today, you can find Deschutes beers in more than 25 states and across the world. The pub downtown is one of the most popular spots in town every night of the year. Like the brewery, the pub itself has nearly doubled in size in recent years meaning there’s usually a shorter wait for a table. But don’t let the wait deter you. Just head into the bar, choose one of the dozen or so beers currently on tap (Local tip: Bachelor Bitter on Cask is a must-have if you can only have one beer.) Mirror Pond is one of the flagship brews and I’ve heard some locals use Black Butte Porter to brush their teeth – it’s that good. The food blurs the line between pub grub and fine dining. The beef used in their burgers comes from cows fed spent grain from the brewing process, making them some of the tastiest burgers anywhere.

WORTHY BREWING
One of the newest breweries to the game, Worthy has quickly garned a name for itself as one of the most popular. It’s expansive east Bend location off Highway 20 (Greenwood Ave.) sets it apart from the others, as do the variety of beers. The Easy Day Kolsch might be the official beer of floating the Deschutes River in the summer. Food wise, you’ll find mac and cheese at just about every pub in town – but few can match Worthy’s gouda and Sriracha creation.

CASCADE LAKES BREWERY
Born in Redmond, Cascade Lakes is one of Central Oregon’s Old Guard of breweries. The popular bend Lodge is on the road from Mt. Bachelor and a locals go-to apres ski spot before heading into downtown. Perennial brews there include the easy drinking Blonde Bombshell and the nutty 20″ Brown. On the menu, how about some wild boar and kobe beef meatloaf or their classic Cascade Turkey Melt?

Everyone here has a favorite, but we tend to visit them all. If you have a chance, you should too – grab a Bend Ale Trail passport and set out on your journey. But if you have to choose, here’s a pretty good start of where to go and what to have. But please – just please – do NOT walk into these places and order a Bud Light. The locals will mock you and most of them don’t even carry it. Cheers!
