Pacific Crest Weekend Sports Fesitval:Year 12

For over a decade people have been coming from near and far to participate in what could be one of the most unique events of its kind – the Pacific Crest Weekend Sports Festival. There is nothing out of the ordinary about any of the events that make up Pacific Crest – it’s the variety that is offered, that makes this event stand out.

Participants are greeted by live music and a race expo upon arrival in Sunriver, OR, the site of the Pacific Crest events. The first event of the weekend is the Kid’s Splash, Pedal-n-Dash, which has become a real crowd pleaser and is definitely a hit with pint-sized participants. Saturday starts off with a half marathon and marathon around the perimeter of the Sunriver community, and is followed by a half iron triathlon (1.2mi swim, 58mi bike, 13.1mi run) and endurance duathlon (58mi bike, 13.1mi run) that starts at Wickiup Reservoir in the Deschutes National Forest. Sunday is also packed with action, including a 5k and 10k run/walk, and two separate kid’s events. An Olympic-distance triathlon (1.5k swim, 28mi bike, 10k run) and duathlon (28mi bike, 10k run) are also slated for Sunday.

The half Iron triathlon is typically hailed as the “main event,” as it draws the most competitive and most geographically diverse field of any of the Pacific Crest events. A $5,000 prize purse adds some tough competition into the mix for the half iron event, with $1,000 on the line for both the top male and female.

Pacific Crest has become one of the most popular multi-sport events in the Northwest, bringing thousands of athletes and families to the popular resort community of Sunriver, nestled in the mountains of Central Oregon. USTA Senior Section Championships

More than 600 tennis players on over 100 teams are expected to participate in the 2008 USTA League Tennis Pacific Northwest Senior and Super Senior Section Championships that will be held June 26-July 1 in Sunriver, Oregon.

This year's tournament will feature the best senior tennis teams from throughout Oregon and Washington. The teams, which represent various tennis clubs and facilities, have finished at the top of their local leagues and are playing for a chance to win a United States Tennis Association Pacific Northwest (USTA/PNW) Section title. Winning teams will also advance to compete in the USTA League Tennis National Championships held in October 2008 for the Senior division and in April 2009 for the Super Senior division.

The Senior Section Championships will be held June 26-29 and features men’s and women’s teams of players who must be age 50 or over who are grouped into four different ability levels. Competition will be held on the Woodlands and Fort Rock Park tennis courts and consists of the best of three doubles matches with the outcome decided by the team that wins at least two of those matches.

In addition to the Senior event, the USTA/PNW Super Senior Section Championships will be held June 29-July 1 in Sunriver. Super Senior players must be age 60 or over and follow the same competitive format as the Senior division.

"These teams play for fun, fitness and competition," said Sheila Banks, USTA/PNW Adult/Senior Recreational Programs Director. "Our Pacific Northwest senior players truly demonstrate that tennis is the sport for a lifetime. They have earned their way here and have a chance to play for a spot in the national championships."

Established in 1980, USTA League Tennis has grown from 13,000 participants in its first year to over 585,000 players across the nation today, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league. USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship

Sunriver To Host 2007 USGA Senior Women's Amateur. Inaugurated in 1962 for women golfers age 50 and over, the championship will be at the Meadows course at Sunriver Resort in 2007.

The Meadows Course at Sunriver Resort was opened in 1969 and was revised in 1999 by John Fought, an Oregonian who won the 1977 U.S. Amateur. Seven holes of the course border the Sunriver. The design pays tribute to American courses of the 1920s and 30s with directional and fore bunkers in prominent use.

Deschutes River Rafting on the Big Eddy Thriller With Sun Country Tours
The forested beauty of the Upper Deschutes River provides a natural paradise for rafting, hiking, and observing bird and wildlife. We are floating through the beautiful Deschutes National Forest, where the flows of lava from Lava Lands National Monument shaped the Deschutes River over 7,000 years ago. Towering ponderosa pines and quaking aspens cover the landscape.
The three-mile Deschutes River rafting adventure begins at Aspen - an old logging camp that's now residence for cattails, blackbirds, and excited rafters! After a flat water training session with your guide, your journey will get underway with some warm-up rapids. These first riffles are rated Class 1 and 2 (based on a scale from 1 to 6, with 6 being the most difficult).
At the halfway point in the trip, you'll pull over to scout the Big Eddy Rapids. After viewing, with your raft guide, the various drop, turns and waves, we will regroup in the raft and challenge this great stretch of river. You will negotiate Kenmore, (Class 3) a drop with a washing machine action. Next you will power through the Notch (Class 3) and ride the white flume past the bat cave. Get ready and dig in because the Souse Hole (Class 3) is just ahead.
Bust through this terrific reversal with a smile because their photographer will get three action photos of you - wet, dry, or screaming! The standing waves will carry you around the corner and set us up for Old Stogie (Class 3) which is the last of the Big Eddy Rapids.
The Roller Coaster Rapids (Class 2) will spill you out into the swimming hole, where relaxation is the name of the game. Their guides will carefully direct your raft to the take out just above Lava Island Falls. With Paddles in hand and lifejackets on, you may pause to take a photo with the beautiful Deschutes River as a backdrop.
This Deschutes River rafting trip is enjoyable for the entire family. Younger children need not paddle if they so choose.

If you are looking for a special way to celebrate July 4th, join the community of Bend for the annual Pet Parade and Old Fashioned July 4th Celebration. The day begins with the Sunrise Lions Club Pancake Breakfast from 8am - Noon, adults eat for $5 and kids eat for $3; then get your heart pumping with the Spark Your Heart 5K walk or run at 8:30 am at Troy Field, then at 9:30, line up to participate in Bend's most historical event, the Pet Parade, where children of all ages (1-100) bring their special leashed pet ( dogs - large & small, llamas, lizards, goats, and lots of stuffed animals - no rabbits or cats please) and parade through downtown Bend. No registration necessary. Parade begins at 10am. Later, after the parade, enjoy unique craft and food booths, old fashioned games, (like three legged races), watermelon eating and water balloon contests as well as wonderful live entertainment from 11am - 4pm. The day's celebration wraps up when the Bend Bulletin presents the annual Bend Community Fireworks Show at Pilot Butte State Park (visible from most areas of Bend), beginning at 10pm.

Each year, during the last weekend in June, athletes, joined by their family and friends, converge on Central Oregon (Sunriver) to take part in the Pacific Crest Weekend Sports Festival. 2007 marks the 11th year for this event and is expected to draw 5,000+ athletes. The Pacific Crest, which has become known as the jewel of multi-sport events in the Northwest has become a destination race for athletes from across the nation as well as internationally.

The Pacific Crest Includes:

half-iron triathlon, endurance duathlon, marathon and half-marathon, Olympic distance triathlon and duathlon, 5K & 10K run/walks, and a Kid's splash pedal-n-dash triathlon and

1-mile & 1/2 mile dash for ages 12 & under.

Mavericks Phase II is coming to Sunriver in 2007! We're pleased to announce the coolest new Sunriver recreational destination. Mavericks is a family-friendly, fun and safe fitness club, reacreational center, and more. Highlighting phase II is a new indoor pool, kids splish & splash play area, spa, conference/meeting room and The FlowRider.

In Sunriver, Mavericks is located on Cottonwood Road just across the street from the North Store.
